Damajuana Hostel - Mendoza - Argentina

The 14 hour coach journey from Buenos Aires to Mendoza was surprisingly very enjoyable - our departure commenced with a game of bingo (annoyingly we didn't win), followed by another carb induced dinner, with wine, a movie, 8 hour sleep and then shortly after finishing breakfast we had arrived. The breakfast included one of Argentinas delicacies, a wagon wheel type biscuit with Dulce letche in the middle- Divine! Although if you're looking to loose weight in South America try to avoid the coach food.

We had such a wonderful time in Mendoza and although it's a city, it had a suburb, 'out of town' type feel to it and it was exactly what we were looking for. Flying straight into BA felt too familiar and we were keen to start exploring and embracing the backpacker culture.

Damajuana, our hostel was slap bang in the middle of what they call 'the strip', it had a pool and a lovely outdoor garden area. As a result it was very easy to meet people and the troublesome two soon became the part of the Damajuana crew. There was an eclectic mix of Aussies, Canadians, Argentinians and Swedes, all with very different personalities and ways of expressing themselves. Some chose to do this through words, others through actions and others through nudity... Ahem Katharine.

Aha, only joking! An Auzzie guy got a bit excitable in drinking card games one evening and decided to sit at the table naked. Ashamedly I did find amusement in the reactions of others when they initially realised. However the Swedes, who were eating dinner at the time were not so impressed.

It was here that we finally went out and returned in the early hours of the following day, 10am to be precise and also enjoyed sociable drinks the other two evenings. Overall the highlight of Mendoza was the vineyard bike tour. We went as a group of 6; two Swedish girls, two ozzy guys and us. Choosing one of the hottest days there was certainly a challenge but not a setback. It was a successful day, only two falls, one of which was me of course, visited 3 vineyards, consumed a respectable amount of wine and actually made it back to the hostel.

2 hours to spare and then the 34 hour coach to Iguazu awaited us. Stocked up on food, water, books and witty conversation we were ready to go.
